Stimulus could be boon for Qwest

Denver-based Qwest Communications is expected to benefit if a draft economic-stimulus measure becomes law.

The $825 billion measure drafted by the U.S. House of Representatives includes $6 billion in grants to expand access to high-speed Internet service in rural and underserved areas.

The Denver telco recently sent President-elect Barack Obama's transition team a proposal to use government grants to provide Internet speeds of 7 megabits a second or higher in unserved areas.  Such a proposal would create thousands of jobs in the engineering and construction of such broadband facilities, Qwest said.

Obama also has said he wants to expand Americans' access to high-speed Internet services.
