The California law firm Lerach Coughlin on Monday offered to pay Denver attorney Curtis Kennedy $64,570 for his time and other costs he incurred in persuading a federal judge to cut Lerach's fee in the Qwest shareholder class-action settlement from $96 million to $60 million.

In a federal court filing, Lerach attorney Michael Dowd noted Kennedy isn't a professional objector trying to get a personal windfall and that Lerach wanted to pay the costs so they wouldn't come out of the shareholder settlement fund. Kennedy, attorney for the Association of U S West Retirees, told the retirees group that the "surprising news is much appreciated."
