Qwest Communications International Inc. won an $8.3 million contract to upgrade the U.S. Department of Energy telephone network at its Washington D.C.-area offices, the company announced Wednesday.

The DOE will switch to a Qwest (NYSE: Q) Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, service at its the federal agency's Washington, D.C., and Germantown, Md., offices.

Denver-based Qwest has handled previous projects upgrading DOE telecommunications systems at the Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Los Alamos, N.M.; and Richland, Wash., facilities.

The latest contract win is not part of the massive government Networx programs for which Qwest became an authorized vendor over the summer.
