Zander out as CEO; Brown to assume post

Ed Zander is out as Motorola Inc.'s chief executive after a roller coaster four years that saw him oversee the cell-phone maker's Razr-led resurgence but ultimately bear blame for strategic gaffes that led to its steep decline.

Motorola President and Chief Operating Officer Greg Brown will succeed Zander on Jan. 1.

Industry experts voiced skepticism the change would produce a turnaround unless accompanied by a new wave of top-selling phones and other mobile devices.

Motorola's announcement ended any lingering speculation about former Qwest CEO Dick Notebaert.

In July, The Wall Street Journal named Notebaert as a possible successor to Zander.  A month earlier, the Journal had named Motorola's Brown as a possible successor to the retiring Notebaert.

So Brown gets the Motorola post, Ed Mueller the top job at Qwest and, at least for the time being, Notebaert remains retired, though active as the chairman of Notre Dame University's board of trustees.
